Most of today’s R/Os have 2 gallon storage tank along with an automatic
shutoff valve. The valve closes to shut off the water production when the tank
is full. Once water is drawn from the tank, the valve reopens to produce more
pure drinking water until the tank refills. More storage is available by adding
another storage tank or a larger storage tank (if there is room under the kitchen
sink).
The membrane production rates vary from 5 to 24 gpd (gallons per day). A 5
gpd membrane means that once 1 gallon of water is removed from the storage tank,
it takes approximately 5 hours to reproduce a gallon of pure water.
A 24 gpd membrane means that once 1 gallon of water is removed,
it only takes 1 hour to reproduce a gallon of pure water. This higher reproduction
rate usually eliminates the need for more storage.
Today’s R/O units have from a 3 to 1 to 5 to 1 RR(rejection
rate). A 3 to 1 means that for every 1 gallon of pure water produced, 3 gallons
of waste water is rejected and forced down the drain. A 5 to 1 means that for
every one gallon produced that 5 gallons of waste water is rejected and forced
down the drain.
There is no waste because water rejected contains the undesired
components of water which are not wanted or needed. Many studies show that these
components can be hazardous to a family’s health.
SWS offers the most modern up to date proven R/O systems, with
the higher reproduction rates and lowest waste water rejection rates available.
Your drinking water would now be 95 to 98% pure for your family.

Water Softeners:
As you may know by now, there are many different shapes, sizes, models and
makes of water softeners. Shopping can be very confusing. Water softeners do
one thing which is remove hardness, minerals from the water, salt or potassium
is used in the process. These are no softeners which do not use salt or potassium.
Hardness of water is measured in gpg (grains per gallon) of hardness. The national
water quality association rates hardness of water as follows:
0 - 3 gpg of hardness – Very soft
4 - 6 gpg of hardness - Moderately soft
7 - 9 gpg of hardness – Moderately hard
10 - 12 gpg of hardness – Very hard
Over 13 gpg of hardness is considered extremely hard. The average water is
in the Las Vegas Valley is 20-25 gpg of hardness, almost twice what is considered
extremely hard. Many water softeners are not made to deal the EXTREME HARD WATER
we have in the Las Vegas valley.
The following are variables in water softeners:
Tank Size Capacity – Amount of softening resin inside the tank
Softening resin – the ability to remove extreme hardness from water
along with the life expectancy of the resin in extreme hard water.
Valve – Is it mechanical, electronic, automatic, manual, set on a timer
or does it have a gallon counter.
Warranties – These vary from 90 days to a limited lifetime with everything
in between – some warranties only include the valve or only the tank
or do not mention resin at all. (Read carefully).
Flow rates – What is the maximum gpm (gallon per minute) flow rate?
SWS offers only water softeners what are built to handle the extreme hard
water which we have in the valley.

Water Conditioners:
There are a wide variety of uses to this term. One could call any type of water
treatment system a water conditioner.
The original use of the term water conditioner was started when a system was
developed that did something to the water in addition to softening. The 1st
water conditioner used carbon or charcoal to remove bad tastes and odors such
as chlorine, sulfur, etc in addition to softening water.
Today’s water conditioner units are anywhere from a 1 stage water softener
up to a 5 stage water conditioner.
The following are various filtering and/or treatment stages which are offered
in water conditioners.
Softening – Reducing hardness, minerals such as calcium, magnesium,
limestone, iron, alkali, etc.
Refining – Carbon or charcoal helps reduce chlorine, bad tastes, odor
and many cancer causing carcinogens.
Silica filtration – Silica sand helps reduce cloudy, murky water, rust
stains, etc and also helps maintain higher flow rates.
Quartz filtration – Additional filtration of undissoLas Vegased solids.
KDF filtration - Helps reduce heavy metals and bacteria such as aluminum,
arsenic, iron, lead, mercury, bacteria, etc
Magnetic/Electrical Treatment – Temporarily changes the molecular structure
of the water to help reduce hard water problems.
By adding any of these features, you now have more than just a water softener
and a better than just soft water quality of water throughout your home. None
of these features produce anything near reverse osmosis quality drinking water.
They simply help produce better water throughout for the entire home to bathe,
cook, shower, wash dishes, clothes and help maintain cleaner appearance and
life expectancy of plumbing, appliances, etc..
As with softeners, the same types of variables come into play: tank size,
capacity, softening resin, quality of the various medias used to treat water,
valves, warranties, flow rates, etc.
Superior water systems offers the highest quality, proven and tested water conditioners available to meet the extreme hard water problem in the Las Vegas Valley.

No-Salt Water Conditioners:
There are many types of
no salt systems available which do a variety of things. Some of these systems
are useful to handle specific problems in dug or drilled wells. Most of these
units do not apply to the Las Vegas Valley water, as they do not address the extreme
hard water problem, unless salt or potassium is used in the ion exchange regeneration
process. At this point, the system also becomes a softener. Superior Water Systems
offers a wide variety of systems to meet your specific needs.

Magnetic Water Conditioners:
This is a process where water flows through a magnetic and/or electrical
field. As water flows through, the molecules of water which contains calcium,
magnesium, limestone, alkali, etc. is charged and/or explodes or implodes and
all these various minerals are separated temporarily. Water is considered hungry
and these minerals immediately start to attract to each other or pull back together.
However, if the water is used immediately after flowing through this magnetic
field, it doesn't have the feel of extreme hard water. Spotting on shower walls,
tubs, glasses, etc. isn't as bad. All of the minerals are still in the water but
the results are more like moderately to very hard water produces instead of the
extreme hard water results. This can be advantageous to elderly who don't want
to deal with heavy salt or potassium bags.
